JOB DESCRIPTION

Dialysis-X is building the last-mile dialysis treatment platform for patients with kidney failure. We are an early-stage medtech startup in rapid build mode – turning a novel implant architecture into a functional product ready for animal and clinical validation.

We are hiring a Senior Product Engineer to lead rapid prototyping, design-for-manufacturing, and bench testing in a part-time capacity. You will translate concept architectures into working prototypes and pilot-ready designs that de-risk our path to a low-cost manufacturing run and pre-clinical animal studies.

ROLE STRUCTURE / ABOUT YOU

  • You have 5+ years of product development experience, ideally at least one hardware lifecycle, from design to clinical/market stage
  • Part-time: up to 20 hours per week (some on-site build/test time, plus flexible async work)
  • Location: on-site in our Boston office for collaborative building and testing, plus remote time for planning, documentation, and reviews
  • Duration: 4-month contract, milestone-based, with a decision point for extending the relationship
  • Have industry experience or a portfolio of shipped/tested hardware, with real-world constraints, beyond theory and academia
  • Have strong prototype, manufacturing, and bench testing experience, plus running experiments under time/cost limits
  • Self-driven, operate well in ambiguity, can structure your own work without heavy supervision

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Build and iterate low-cost prototypes that test key engineering assumptions, using first principles to choose simple, robust solutions
  • Run benchtop experiments and simulations that compare designs and materials, filtering for the most promising candidates
  • Prioritize resource-efficient ways to answer critical questions quickly
develop design-for-manufacturing strategies for an initial pilot run, including process selection, tooling, and vendor conversations
  • Evaluate and select materials and sealing approaches (e.g., elastomers, adhesives, mechanical seals) appropriate for blood-contacting and implant-adjacent applications
  • Create CAD designs, drawings, and build instructions that can be executed by contract manufacturers, tool shops, and the internal team
  • Communicate trade-offs and risks to a diverse audience in a concise, decision-oriented way

WHAT YOU’LL GAIN

  • Direct ownership over critical development of a new vascular access technology, with immediate impact on pre-clinical roadmap
  • A potential path to extended collaboration (full-time, expanded contract, leadership, or adviser role), if milestones are met
  • Strong, senior-level references and advocacy from the management as you grow your career, or launch your own venture
  • Exposure to KOLs and advisers who are actively shaping the future of home dialysis and vascular access technology
  • A flexible, part-time contract that lets you contribute at a high level without leaving your current full-time role – just yet

Founders are everywhere, but resources aren’t.

That’s a shame, because the next big idea could come from anywhere.

The Massachusetts Founder Network aims to bridge the gap, giving startup founders equitable access to resources that will help their companies grow.

We support MA founders no matter where they come from, their company’s stage, or their business sector. We want to democratize access to the resources that will help them accelerate—and excel. All founders are welcome to find resources and community at MFN while creating connections, expanding their networks, and learning from one another.

About MFN

The Massachusetts Founders Network is a central hub for all things startups, fostering innovation and collaboration across the state. MFN offers valuable networking, resources, mentorship, and community for startup founders in Massachusetts.

MFN is produced by Lever, a startup accelerator based in North Adams. Our work is supported by funding from and collaboration with the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, based in Westborough.

We’ve been advising and connecting with entrepreneurs for years, and we’re using that knowledge and network to launch something new, with the help of an advisory board of successful founders and major players in the startup ecosystem.

We plan to launch the Massachusetts Founders Network in summer 2023. Sign up for our newsletter to get alerts about our launch, new features, and MFN events!
