No-Cost Education Opportunities for Startup Founders & Their Workforce
MFN welcomed Commonwealth Corporation (CommCorp) to highlight training resources available to founders across Massachusetts. CommCorp is a quasi-public agency responsible for administering workforce development programs, both privately and publicly funded, which are intended to bolster professional skills and knowledge within the expanding regional economy.
CommCorp’s Workforce Training Fund Program (WTFP) focuses on small and medium-sized businesses that otherwise would not be able to invest in improving workplace skills. WTFP Express, one of two funded programs offered through the Workforce Training Fund, offers a maximum of $20,000 in training reimbursement to qualifying companies with 100 or fewer employers. Here’s what else you missed from our webinar with Fernando Martinez, Associate Director of the WTFP Express Program:
- WTFP Express Grants are only available to Massachusetts companies with W-2 payroll employees. This means the funding does not extend to unpaid interns and contractors at your startup. For the application process, you will need your company’s Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), and a Certificate of Good Standing (COGS) from the Massachusetts Department of Revenue. Both nonprofit and for-profit companies are eligible to apply.
- WTFP Express Grants stipulate that employees must undergo training on company time. This streamlines how you can submit for reimbursement. For Express Program grant recipient companies with 100 or fewer Massachusetts W-2 employees, founders who are MA W-2 employees could be reimbursed up to $3,000 for each training course taken by an individual employee. Depending on the subject matter, courses can be taught remotely or onsite.
- Over 4,000 pre-approved courses are accessible in the Express Program training directory. Pre-approved trainings include English as a Second Language (ESOL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), Computer Technology, Business Software, Operations/Production, Project Management, Climate Change Resiliency, and Communication/Marketing courses. Courses your company is legally mandated to provide, such as safety training mandated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), can not be covered through an Express Program grant.
Applications for the Express Program are submitted on a rolling basis. Applications to the course(s) that pique your company’s interest are required at least three weeks (21 days) before the training begins. If you would like to take a training that occurs more than one year in advance, apply for funding closer to the start date to better increase the chances of securing the grant. A sample of costs covered under an Express Program grant is listed in the graphic below. You can check out the WTFP Express Program Directory here!
- CommCorp can audit all WTFP Award Recipients. Information that could be requested by WTFP Express Program administrators includes–but is not limited to–interviews with attending employees, payroll records verifying MA payroll taxes are being paid on trainees, and in-session observations.
