Robby Bitting started his career at MassChallenge as an intern and is now in a leadership role. He shared some info with us about how MassChallenge can help startups, why participation in Challenge programs can be an important step in a company’s journey, and the obstacles he sees founders come up against.
MFN: What kind of programs does MassChallenge offer, and what’s currently exciting and new?
A: MassChallenge is all about running startup accelerators designed to assist entrepreneurs in launching and scaling their ventures. We have two primary types of programs. The first one is our early-stage, industry-agnostic accelerator. This program is focused on connecting entrepreneurs with mentors who can provide invaluable guidance. What’s unique is that these entrepreneurs have the chance to compete for cash grants that come with no equity stake in their companies. It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to move forward with their business ideas.
The second type of program we run is problem-based, where we bring entrepreneurs together to work on specific projects with larger corporations and institutions. They work towards achieving milestones, like pilot projects or proofs of concept. We cover a range of industries, including health care, FinTech, safety and security, and dual-use food and climate.
MFN: Why are accelerators like MassChallenge essential for founders? Why are challenge programs like these so important for entrepreneurs?
A: Accelerators play a vital role for founders. Entrepreneurship can be a solitary journey at times, and it’s crucial to surround yourself with the right mentors, peers, and potential collaborators who can guide you on your path. These networks can be instrumental in demonstrating that your company can thrive. Moreover, the input you receive from customers, advisors, and peers can be invaluable in helping your venture succeed. Beyond that, accelerators add a sense of joy, fun, and community to entrepreneurship. The vibrant community we create is an integral part of what makes entrepreneurship appealing.
MFN: What’s your background? What led you to this work?
A: I started as a marketing intern back in 2012, and over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of growing alongside the numerous early-stage entrepreneurs we’ve supported.
People often ask me if I’ve considered moving on to startups or other ventures, but MassChallenge has been such an exciting journey for me. We’ve grown from running just one program a year to now overseeing 15 programs and supporting around 600 startups annually. This growth and impact have been incredibly fulfilling, making it an exciting ride that I’m delighted to continue.
MFN: What do you believe is most important to the founder community you work with right now? What are their primary needs and concerns?
A: The founder community we work with has diverse needs, but there are some common themes. They typically seek smart advisors who can help validate their strategies and milestones. Whether it’s taking their product to market, refining their investment or fundraising strategy, or establishing those crucial early customer relationships, having access to expert guidance is key.
MFN: Are there any common obstacles you observe among entrepreneurs?
A: One that stands out is entrepreneurs becoming overly fixated on their technology or solution rather than staying close to their customers and the underlying problem they’re solving. It’s essential for them to remain engaged with their target audience, avoiding assumptions, and maintaining a passion for solving the problem effectively, regardless of the specific solution.
