The essentials
- Set a goal for attending events. It will be the compass that will guide you through all your planning.
- Do your research and come prepared with conversation starters and ideas about who to connect with.
- Networking doesn’t end when the event is over.
As an entrepreneur, one of the most effective ways to build your company and increase your success is by expanding your network. One way of accomplishing this is by attending events where you will be able to network and make valuable connections that can help you grow your business.
Networking at events can be intimidating and overwhelming, especially if you’re not sure how to approach it. When I first started it was overwhelming and scary! Where could I even begin? Through experience, here are some of the best tips I’ve learned.
- Set a goal
Why are you attending? You must have a goal that you are trying to accomplish. Is it to gain access to possible investors? Obtain new clients? Be aware of what this goal is because it will be the compass that will guide you through all your planning. - Research
Research the event beforehand, including the speakers, sponsors, and attendees. This information will help you identify potential people to connect with and prepare for relevant conversations. - Have topic starters ready
By doing the research previously, you will be able to have certain topic starters and know the vocabulary and articulate topics that are important to the person you are engaging with. It will also help put you at ease since you won’t be worrying about how to start the conversation. - Have your elevator pitch ready
An elevator pitch is a concise summary of your business that you can deliver in under a minute. It’s essential to have a clear and compelling elevator pitch ready so that you can introduce yourself and your business effectively. Most attendees don’t have much time or minutes to talk to you to understand your business. Summarize your business and make the story compelling in under 60 seconds.- Here is my guide on how to structure an effective elevator pitch.

- Be memorable
As discussed in a previous article, being memorable is one of the most effective ways to create meaningful relationships and build upon them. Embracing your own uniqueness and poke fun at the whole awkward situation of interrupting possible conversations. Trust me—that will always get a few laughs, because EVERYONE is feeling the same. - Ask open-ended questions
Asking open-ended questions is an effective way for people to open up and share more about themselves and their businesses. Avoid asking yes or no questions and instead ask questions that encourage conversation, such as “What inspired you to start your business?” or “What challenges have you faced in your industry?”7. Follow up
Networking doesn’t end when the event is over. Follow up with the people you met at the event, whether it’s through email, social media, or phone. Thank them for their time, and if appropriate, suggest a follow-up meeting or call. Keep in touch with your network and continue to build relationships over time.
In the end, it is up to you to increase your network. However, by being prepared beforehand and well-informed, you will see your success rate increase. Now best of luck out there, entrepreneurs, and keep making your mark in the world.
