Siobhan Dullea is Executive Director of Innovate@BU, a Boston University initiative to help students become drivers of innovation in their own lives, careers, and communities. She told MFN about how the university plays a role in the state’s entrepreneur ecosystem, and what kinds of projects BU students are spinning up.
Q: How does your work fit in with our innovation ecosystem in Massachusetts?
A: BU plays an important role in creating and retaining talent for the innovation ecosystem in Massachusetts and beyond. My role leading Innovate@BU involves supporting all 17 schools and colleges at the university, helping students develop an innovative mindset and entrepreneurial skills so they can become effective problem solvers in various aspects of their lives.
One of the reasons I was attracted to this position with Innovate@BU is that I don’t report to any single school or college; instead, I support all students. This allows me to work with a diverse range of students and help them develop problem-solving skills.
Q: What are some of the new and exciting projects that students are working on at BU right now?
A: Students are working on a wide array of innovative projects. With 17 schools and colleges, we see everything from cutting-edge dialysis approaches to projects that teach young children about sustainability.
Q: What are some of the issues that BU students are concerned about today? What themes come up often?
A: Mental health is a major concern among students. Unlike in the past, today’s students are more open to discussing and addressing mental health challenges. They are working on innovative solutions to these challenges. For example, there are projects focusing on self-affirmations and addressing imposter syndrome, starting from early childhood, as well as other mental health issues. Research shows that habits formed before the age of 10 tend to last a lifetime.
Q: Why is this work important to you?
A: I’ve worked in roles that didn’t exist when I was in college, so I understand the importance of preparing students for careers in emerging fields. I’ve been part of a founding team for a marketing technology startup which grew until it was acquired and served as the CEO of MassChallenge Global Startup Accelerator for several years, which has given me extensive experience in starting and growing companies. I want to help the next generation and share my knowledge.
