MFN staff recently spoke with Tyler McFarland and Debbie Hayes from Northeastern’s MGEN (Multidisciplinary Engineering/IT Masters) co-op program about how founders could leverage their services. Here’s what we learned:
Ranked #1 by US News and World Report for Co-op/Internship programs, Northeastern University places its students in a wide range of companies. The program’s co-op coordinators are committed to giving all qualified students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in their chosen field.
For startup founders, this program can be helpful in finding college talent that is ready and willing to learn and contribute. Payment is provided to interns by the hiring company, with salary ranges varying by position.
How the Program Operates
Timeline:
For the Northeastern program, the terms “co-op” and “internship” can be used interchangeably.
- Internship
-
-
- 8-12 week experiences
- Mainly in the summer
- Mix of paid and unpaid opportunities
- Can be converted into a co-op
-
- Co-Op:
-
- 4, 6, or 8 month experiences
- Allows students to work on long-term projects and meaningfully contribute to business operations.
- Usually paid (or stipend provided).
As you can see, founders can employ students full-time for up to 8 months, when the student’s sole focus would be on their co-op experience. Students cannot take courses while on a full-time co-op.
Getting connected:
Northeastern’s co-op program is a particularly good fit for busy startup founders. Coordinators help with the vetting process, reducing the time it takes to review applications. Once a student has been selected, the Coordinators continue to support the founder with help onboarding the student and help addressing any issues that arise during the co-op period. Explained Tyler, “when you partner with Northeastern, you get a one-on-one relationship with us.”
